This project focuses on developing methods to fully characterize ultrafine aerosols produced in workplaces. Research is being carried out on characterizing exposure in terms of aerosol number and surface-area, and investigating the surface characteristics of particles through the use of advanced electron microscopy techniques. The two approaches combined together will provide the tools to enable a greater understanding of toxicologically-relevant particle characteristics to be developed, and will allow exposure monitoring against relevant metrics.
